Start on Normal and adjust as you play
Yes, you can change difficulty outside battle: start on Normal to learn combat at its baseline, choose Casual for gentler fights, or pick Expert for tougher battles and increased MRP. You can complete the trophy list on Casual while retaining access to story progression and collectibles.
What Casual, Normal and Expert change
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Casual | Enemies have less HP, lower stagger resistance, weaker attacks and lower speed than on Normal, while your party deals more damage. This gives you more breathing room while learning party roles and weaknesses. Choose it when you want the adventure to move along with gentler battles. |
| Normal | Normal is the baseline for enemy HP, stagger resistance, damage and speed, as well as your outgoing damage. Start here if you want to learn how your party works before adjusting the challenge. Keep playing on it while the balance feels enjoyable. |
| Expert | Enemies have more HP, higher stagger resistance, stronger attacks and greater speed than on Normal. Your outgoing damage is 80% of Normal, making the same setup less damaging before you account for tougher enemies. Choose it if you enjoy planning protection, elemental coverage and timely breaks. |
Expert awards 150% of Normal's MRP, but EXP and gil do not receive that same difficulty bonus. Consider Expert for Mastery progression once your party handles its battles reliably. The extra MRP is most useful when the fights remain manageable enough to keep winning.
Change difficulty outside battle
- Open System while you are outside battle.
- Choose Options from the System menu.
- Open Gameplay to reach the difficulty setting.
- Select Casual, Normal or Expert as your preferred difficulty.
- Check the selected difficulty in Gameplay; seeing your chosen mode there confirms the change.
Your opening choice is not permanent, so you can adjust the challenge as your party develops. No trophy requires a higher difficulty, and the full list can be completed on Casual. Story progression and collectible access also remain available, so choose the setting that makes the battles enjoyable for you.
Cover the roles early Expert battles demand
Prepare for early Expert encounters with Fina's healing, the Warrior of Light Vision's protection, Terra's elemental attacks and Cloud's breaking tools. Treat these as jobs to cover when arranging your available party and Visions. Protect or Shell effects can support the team when incoming damage is stopping you from setting up a break.

Match a Vision's attacks to the character using it. Physical and magical moves are distinct, and an elemental attack is not automatically magical. If damage feels low, review the Vision's attack summary in Equipment and Abilities to check whether its moves suit the character's stronger attacking stat.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
Turn Expert fights into stagger openings

Prioritize a break against the enemy whose upcoming action threatens your party most. Breaking an enemy skips its turn, and the character who lands the break receives a bonus-phase attack. A well-timed break therefore helps you survive while creating another chance to attack.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
- Use Protect or Shell effects when incoming damage is the immediate problem. Expert enemies hit harder and move faster than on Normal, putting more pressure on your preparation. Defensive support can help your party stay alive long enough to exploit weaknesses and stagger the enemy.

Aim to have every enemy staggered together when fighting a group. A sweeping stagger grants the entire party an extra attack and ends with a Resonance attack from an equipped Vision. This creates an opening to turn your preparation into a stronger offensive push.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
Strengthen the party when preparation falls short

Equip useful Visions as you progress through normal battles. Equipped Visions earn Mastery points separately from character experience, and Mastery progress belongs to each character individually. Rain developing a Vision does not grant its bonuses to Fina, so your party members need their own progress.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
- Retry the encounter with the upgrade that addresses your main problem. A party that survives the opening or reaches a stagger more comfortably shows that the change is helping. That visible improvement is how you can tell your preparation is working.
Keep demo limits separate from full-game goals
The demo caps characters at level 15 and Vision Mastery at rank five. Tron's MR9 Half MP Cost therefore belongs to your full-game plans, beyond what the demo lets you earn. Within the demo, focus on the equipment, Awakening upgrades and Mastery rewards available to your current party.
